Box Score 2 Turlock, CA - The Simon Fraser University softball team started the Mizuno Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal-State University Stanislaus on Friday with a pair of victories, defeating Great Northwest Athletic Conference rival Western Oregon 10-5 and the Hawaii Pacific Seawarriors, 1-0.
Cara Lukawesky (Coquitlam, BC) got the start and the win for the Clan against Western Oregon, pitching a complete game, allowing six hits and five runs, only three of which were earned, and striking out five.
Three Clan batters had multi-hit games as
Carly Lepoutre (Pickering, ON) went two for four for the Clan, scoring one run and driving in another,
Trisha Bouchard (Montreal, QC) went two for four, scoring a run and driving in two and
Nicole Ratel (Langley, BC) went two for three with two runs batted in and a run scored.
In total, the Clan offence had 12 hits in the game.
"We jumped out to an early lead and had our chances to add to it, but went flat offensively," said Head Coach
Mike Renney. "That gave some life to Western Oregon who capitalized on a couple of our miscues and again made a game of it, fortunately our offence got a couple insurance runs back. I thought Lukawesky threw well but didn't get consistent defence behind her."
Lepoutre scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning when, after leading off with an infield single and advancing to third on a throwing error, she scored on a fielder's choice.
The score remained 1-0 until the third when the Clan offence exploded for five runs.
Lauren Mew (Vancouver, BC) led off the rally with a single and advanced to third on a throwing error that allowed Bouchard to reach second.
Kaitlyn Cameron (Langley, BC) then stepped up to the plate and drove a double to left centre, scoring Bouchard and Mew to give the Clan a couple of insurance runs.
The rally continued as Cameron advanced to third on a wild pitch and
Danielle Raison (Langley, BC) walked. The Clan then loaded the bases on a
Lauren Kolanko (North Vancouver, BC) infield single.
Alex Baylak (Regina, SK) kept things going for SFU with a single to right field that advanced all the runners one base, and scored a run, keeping the bases loaded for Ratel who cashed in two more for the Clan with a single of her own.
With the score 6-0 in the fourth inning Western Oregon rallied for four runs of their own but SFU added one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to secure the five run victory.
Kelsie Hawkins (Victoria, BC) got the start for SFU against Hawaii Pacific and pitched a complete game shutout, her third shut out in a row. She allowed just two hits in seven innings of work in game two while striking out three batters.
It was Hawkins GNAC leading seventh shut out of the season.
"It was a classic pitching duel. Both team's offences were kept in check by the opposing pitcher. We had a couple of chances early and then didn't threaten until we scored, where we capitalized on a double steal with two out. As with past games,
Kelsie Hawkins pitched a very good game and dug in when needed," continued Renney.
Rachel Kolanko (North Vancouver, BC) scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning after she came in to pinch run for Cameron who was aboard after a one out double.
Kolanko advanced to third on a single by Raison and then scored when the Clan executed a double steal, with Raison taking second and Kolanko crossing the plate.
Hawkins shut down HPU then rest of the way, not allowing a hit after the fourth inning.
With the victories, the Clan's record improves to 17-14 on the season. Since the game against Western Oregon was a tournament game it does not count in the GNAC standings meaning SFU's GNAC record remains 11-4.
Simon Fraser will continue the Mizuno Tournament of Champions with three games on Saturday, taking on NCAA Division II 16th ranked Sonoma State at 9:00 a.m., Notre Dame de Namur at 1:15 p.m. and the hosts from Cal-State Stanislaus at 3:45 p.m.
"Saturday will test us, not only with having to play three games, but against three quality teams," finished Renney.
