Box Score
Burnaby, BC - On Saturday afternoon the Simon Fraser University volleyball team got their first win of the 2013 season with a three sets to none victory over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack before defeating the Columbia Bible College Bearcats in the evening game, three sets to one.
The wins were the first for Coach
Gina Schmidt (Beaverlodge, AB) in her head coaching career.
In the opener against TRU,
Kelsey Robinson (Surrey, BC) led the Clan in both kills and digs, with 15 and 12 respectively.
Amanda Renkema (Delta, BC) followed in kills with 10 and
Alison McKay (Port Moody, BC), making her first start at libero for SFU, had 10 digs.
"I thought we did a good job of coming back from a disappointing loss last night and just playing steady throughout the whole game. They were able to adjust to whatever came at them today," said Schmidt after the win over TRU. "I think we can take things away from every match. I hope our team takes away the positives from this match and the things we have to learn from as well."
The first set was close throughout as the score was tied at seven in the early going. From there the Clan went on an 11-5 run to open up a six point lead before eventually taking the set, 25-23.
The second set was never in doubt as the Clan jumped out to a 7-2 lead, eventually taking the set 25-13.
In the third and final set, TRU attempted to make a comeback with a late lead in the set at 20-17 but a well timed timeout call for the Clan sparked the home side led to an 8-3 run to close out the set, and the match.
The win in Saturday's opener improved the Clan's record to 1-1 on the season.
The Clan looked in control in the early going against the Bearcats as SFU took the first set, 25-9 and the second set 25-19 before CBC edged out a 25-23 victory in the third set to get in the game.
SFU closed things out in the fourth set, winning the set 25-22 and the match three sets to one.
"I love the way this team is coming together," said Clan freshman McKay. "We have a great coaching staff and great players. I've just been working hard and am glad we got some results today."
McKay recorded 13 digs in the game, coming in second on the team behind
Alanna Chan (Port Moody, BC) who recorded 14.
Two Clan players recorded double digits in kills against the Bearcats, as Renkema led the way with 12 and Robinson followed with 10.
With the wins, the Clan move to 2-1 on the season ahead of more non-conference play next weekend, when the Clan host the first ever SFU Invitational, against the Camosun Chargers, the Capilano Blues and the Douglas Royals.
