Clan fall to Montana State Billings in conference opener

9/19/2013 4:05:00 PM

Box Score Billings, MT - The Simon Fraser University women's soccer team got their conference schedule underway with a 2-0 loss to the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets on Thursday afternoon.

"The cross bar that we hit half way through the first half, if that goes in it's a different game," said Head Coach Shelley Howieson. "We gave a spirited performance out there, unfortunately we had a couple mental lapses on set pieces that cost us goals. We had some opportunities but we are a bit snake bit right now. It's tough. It's positive because we are creating opportunities and we just need to stay positive."

Due to injuries to the Clan goalkeepers, freshman Teagan Rae Sorokan (North Vancouver, BC) got his first collegiate start in goal and made two saves in the game.

The Clan got the first shot of the game from Karm Jawandha (Delta, BC) in the 16th minute but the home side recorded the first goal, that would prove to be the game winner, in the 20th minute when Heidi Greenback scored for MSUB on a header. Katlyn Lokay got the assist.

While the Clan got most of the opportunities to score in the match they could not solve the MSUB goalkeeper, who made six saves in the game to keep SFU off the scoresheet. MSUB also got some help from the crossbar, as three Clan shots rang off the bar in the match.

MSUB added an insurance goal in the 78th minute on a scramble in front of net to make it 2-0.

With the loss, the Clan start the Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule off 0-1, and move to 0-3 overall.

The game was the first game of a two game road trip through Montana and Idaho as the Clan will be in Nampa, ID on Saturday to face the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders.
