Box Score Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University volleyball team won their third straight game on Friday night, defeating the Camosun Chargers in straight sets.
The Clan took set number one 25-18, the second set 25-19 and the third and final set 25-15.
"I liked our focus and intensity throughout the match," said Head Coach
Gina Schmidt. "I thought we did a good job with our serve and serve-receive. Against any team you can be competitive if you do those two things. I thought we also had some good offensive performances. Brooklyn (Gould-Bradbury) did a good job of creating opportunities for our hitters and Kelsey (Robinson) did a good job of putting those opportunities away. Devon (May) and Alison (McKay) come from good winning programs as does Brooklyn and I think that makes a huge difference at key times."
Kelsey Robinson (Surrey, BC) led the team with 12 digs followed by
Alison McKay (Port Moody, BC) who had 11.
Robinson also led the team with 12 kills while
Amanda Renkema (Delta, BC) and
Keirsten Mend (Naramata, BC) had seven each.
"I think we played a really consistent game tonight and the competitiveness we are bringing so far this season is really refreshing," said Robinson. "I'm having a lot of fun playing right now after missing last season with an injury."
The Clan trailed 4-2 early in the first set but quickly jumped in front of the Chargers, scoring the next seven points to take control of the set and cruise to the 25-18 opening set win.
The second set was tight in the early going as the two sides were tied at 10 at the midway point. SFU pulled away from there scoring 11 of the next 15 points to go on to win the second set by six.
The third set was never in doubt as the Clan went on a 7-1 run with the score tied at three in the early going to take a six point lead in the set and grew their lead from there, winning the third and final set by 10 points to take the match.
With the win the Clan improve to 3-1 on the season.
SFU will continue the first annual SFU Invitational on Saturday in the West Gym against the Capilano University Blues at 12:30 p.m. and the Douglas College Royals at 7:30 p.m.
