Box Score 2 Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University volleyball team has won five straight thanks to two victories on Saturday as the Clan defeated the Capilano University Blues three sets to none in the afternoon before defeating the Douglas College Royals in straight sets in the night cap.
Over the five game winning streak the Clan have only lost one set.
"I thought we had a great team effort consistently throughout the weekend," said Head Coach
Gina Schmidt. "We used several different lineups but whoever was out there played their role and played it well."
Against Capilano, the Clan earned the victory in straight sets, grabbing their fourth straight victory.
Kelsey Robinson (Surrey, BC) led the team with 12 kills while Madeleine Hait (Burnaby, BC) had six.
Alanna Chan (Port Moody, BC) had 15 digs for SFU while
Helen Yan (Port Moody, BC) also reached double digits, recording 10.
The Clan trailed 5-1 early in the first set but scored eight of the next 12 points to tie the set at nine. The two sides traded points until the set was tied at 16 but from there the Clan took off, outscoring Capilano 9-1 the rest of the way to take the set, 25-17.
SFU never trailed in the second set.
After the two sides traded points to open the second, SFU pulled away taking the set 25-13.
Trying to push the match to a fourth set, Capilano kept things close early in the third as the set was tied at 11 as things reached the midway point. The Clan scored the next three points to take the lead at 14-11 and continued to build from there, eventually taking the set 25-18 and the match three sets to none.
Against Douglas College in the night game, three Clan players reached double figures in kills as Robinson led the way with 11, while Hait and
Amanda Renkema (Delta, BC) each had 10.
Brooklyn Gould-Bradbury (Seattle, WA) had another big game for SFU, recording 38 assists in the contest.
"I love running a five-one offensively and being the setter in the front row. Blocking is a little bit of a struggle for me but it's a lot of fun at the same time," said Gould-Bradbury. "Coach Schmidt has done an amazing job. I think all of the new players along with the coaching staff have brought a whole new attitude and a new aggressiveness to the court."
Chan once again led the team in digs, recording 15 as she did in the afternoon game against Capilano.
In the entire match against Douglas, the Clan trailed only once, coming in the third set when Douglas scored the first point.
In the opening set, the Clan scored the first four points and 10 of the first 12 to take a 10-2 lead in the early going. SFU would maintain their eight point advantage the rest of the way, winning the set 25-17.
The Clan gradually built their lead in the second set, leading by three points at 10-7 and then six points at 20-14 before taking the set 25-17.
The third set was close throughout as the score was tied 10 times. With the score at 16-16, the Clan went on a 9-4 run to close out the set, and the match with a 25-20 third set victory.
Simon Fraser has now exceeded their 2012 win total as the Clan's record sits at 5-1.
With non-conference play in the books, SFU will now shift focus to conference play as the team travels to take on the Seattle Pacific Falcons and the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets next week.
