9/26/2013 10:47:00 PM

Box Score Seattle, WA - The Simon Fraser University volleyball team started conference play on Thursday evening against the Seattle Pacific Falcons, losing the match three sets to one.

While the Clan's conference schedule started with a loss their first set of the GNAC season was a win as they took the opener 25-16 before dropping the next three sets 25-14, 25-13 and 25-20.

"We played well at times but we weren't able to sustain it over a long enough period," said Head Coach Gina Schmidt. "I thought our back court play kept us competitive but we weren't able to find solutions on the offensive end."

Kelsey Robinson (Delta, BC) led the team with 14 kills.

Alanna Chan (Port Moody, BC) led the team defensively with 13 digs followed by Robinson with 12.

Brooklyn Gould-Bradbury (Seattle, WA) had 28 assists in the loss.

With the score tied at three early in the first set the Clan went on an 8-3 run to take control of the set at 11-6. The Clan built their lead to 10 at 21-11 before taking the set by nine.

In the second set it was tied at four in the early going before the Falcons went on an eight point point run to jump out to a 12-4 lead, eventually dropping the set 25-14.

The third set was a battle, as the score was tied seven times in the early going but once again, SPU was able to take the set 25-13.

It appeared the Clan would force a fifth and deciding set in the fourth when SFU took a 19-11 lead but the Falcons stormed back, outscoring the Clan 14-1 to take the set, and the match, three sets to one.

With the loss the Clan drop to 5-2 on the 2013 season, 0-1 in GNAC play.

SFU will now travel to Montana where they will face the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. PST.
