Box Score
Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University Clan women's basketball team fell 63-54 to the Central Washington Wildcats
Saturday night at home.
The loss snapped an 18 game home winning streak dating back to
February 2012.
"We didn't come to play" said Head Coach
Bruce Langford on his team. "We had no effort, no energy and no intensity. We were very disjointed offensively."
SFU never held a lead throughout the game.
"They just wanted it more than us," explained junior
Erin Chambers (Mission, BC). "It was gut check time for us. We let them get way too many boards. They out hustled us on our floor and that is unacceptable."
Though the team would shoot just 33.9 percent from the field and 21.1 percent from the three-point line, Chambers led all scorers with 32 points on 12-of-18 shooting, plus 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
After scoring 13 of her points in the opening 20 minutes, Chambers went on a tear in the second half scoring 19 points and helping the Clan get within striking distance of coming all the way back.
Senior
Marie-Line Petit (Bergeronnes, QC) added eight points, including two three-pointers which cut the Wildcats lead midway through the second half.
With just four minutes remaining in the game, Chambers finished off a nice play with a lay-up to make the score 51-49 and then following two free throws kept the game at a two point difference as the Wildcats led just 53-51.
"Erin was very, very good," said Langford on his guards play. "She scored in many different ways. She got to the line a bit, made a couple of threes."
However, that would be as close as the Clan would get as Central Washington pulled away for the nine point victory.
Trailing 31-19 at the half, SFU were able to outscore the Wildcats 35-32 in the second half, but it was not enough to earn the victory.
Jasmine Parker led Central Washington in scoring with 21 points, as well, Jessica VanDyke finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Meg Wilson (London, ON) led the Clan in rebounds with five, while
Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) had a team high four assists.
With the loss, SFU's record falls to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
The Clan will hit the road again next week, as the travel to Lacey, WA on
Thursday to face conference leading Saint Martin's and then down to Monmouth, OR on
Saturday against Western Oregon.
Thursday's game will tip off at 7:00 p.m. and
Saturday's at 5:15 p.m.
