Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University basketball teams return to the courts this weekend as they continue play in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
The Clan men return home to the West Gym after three games on the road, while the women head to Washington and Oregon.
Fans can tune into the games by following the links on the Clan's home page: athletics.sfu.ca, under "Upcoming Games".
Men vs Montana State - Billings
After two losses on the road the SFU men return home, first hosting Montana State – Billings this Thursday, January 16, at 7:00pm.
The two teams look to match up well on paper, despite their differences in records, as the 0-5 Clan have exhibited higher quality play than their record suggests.
The Yellowjackets are 3-3 in GNAC play and will look to go break on to the winning side of action with this game so the Clan will need to be ready, especially since the visitors boast the second best scoring defence in the conference.
SFU's
Taylor Dunn and
Justin Cole have been the Clan's leading point scorers the past few games, so the team will look for their presence on the court this weekend.
The team also plays their best when
Ibrahim Appiah and
David Gebru are big contributors from the post, so look for the seniors to spark the competition in the paint.
Women vs Saint Martin's
The Clan women hit the road this week as they take on the GNAC leaders from Saint Martin's University.
The Saints are 4-1 in conference play after and upset over former leaders Alaska Anchorage, and have received national poll votes for the first time this season.
The SFU women are coming off a disappointing loss to Central Washington so they will look to use that spark to come back and upset the GNAC leaders.
SFU's offence is led by junior
Erin Chambers who had 57 points in her last two games, and she will look to recreate that intensity in this very important game.
The team needs to support the captain however, as in Saturday's loss Chambers' 32 points could not hold off the Wildcats when the next highest scorers had 8 and 5 respectively.
The Saints are led by Chelsea Haskey who averages 14.5 points per game, but it is their team play that allows them to continue winning.
They rank first in the conference in scoring defence, allowing on average only 57.6 allow 66.1 for fourth in the GNAC.
The game gets underway at 7:00pm in Lacey, WA this Thursday, January 16.
Men vs Seattle Pacific
After Thursday's match the Clan men return to the West Gym to host the second-place GNAC team from Seattle Pacific .
The Falcons are currently 4-2 in conference play and will look to continue their domination against the Clan.
SFU will need to support from the home crowd as well as a strong team effort to best the Falcon, but their showing last week against Western Washington proves that they have the ability to play with the top teams in the conference.
Leading at the half, the men ultimately fell to the Vikings , but displayed a composure and intensity that is slowly becoming more visible on a team that has struggled in the past.
The game gets underway at 7:00pm on Saturday, January 18 in the West Gym.
Women vs Western Oregon
Following a game against the conference leaders, the Clan continue south to Monmouth, OR where they take on Western Oregon, the eighth place team in the GNAC.
In their 13 meetings SFU has won 10, and will look to make it 11 this weekend when the game tips off at 5:15pm.
The Wolves are led by Dana Goularte who averages 18.2 points per game and Chantal Divilbiss with 12.3.
The Clan will need to focus on their team defence in this match, as well as try to improve on their consistency from beyond the arc which has slipped since the return in 2014.
SFU will have a height advantage in the post with 6'5"
Rebecca Langmead who had her first double-double of the season two games ago, and will look to outplay her smaller competitors in the paint.
The closest Wolf is 6'2" in height.
