Box Score Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University men's basketball team fell to the first place team in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, Seattle Pacific University Falcons on
Saturday night, 73-49.
"We just came out slow and weren't ready to play from the jump. And when you play a team that is that good, you can't afford to start slow," said
Taylor Dunn (Vancouver, WA). "They'll get you down early, and you'll be out of the game."
Dunn scored 11 points against the Falcons, while grabbing five rebounds, one assist, and one block.
Justin Cole (Los Angeles, CA) earned the top spot in scoring for the Clan, getting 12 points.
Sango Niang (Paris, France) and
Ibrahim Appiah (Montreal, QC) also chipped in 10 a piece.
Appiah also earned double-digits in rebounds, grabbing 10.
Falcon guard David Downs led the visitors with 14 points, while Simon Patrick added 13 and Cory Hutsen earned 12.
Three-point shooting proved to be a roadblock for SFU as the team shot just 2-12 from beyond-the-arc, while SPU shot 4-6.
The Clan started strong in the first minutes, pressuring the Falcons while carrying the game's momentum.
With 17:33 to go in the first half, two converted free throws from Cole gave SFU a two point-edge over the visiting team, 6-4.
However, that would be the only lead the Clan would see in the game as the Falcons quickly took off on an 18-4 run to bring the score to 26-12 with 10:58 left in the first half.
By halftime, SPU extended their lead to 42-19.
SFU battled through the final 20 minutes of play, but the damage had already been done.
The Clan's record falls to 0-7 in the GNAC with the loss, and 7-8 overall.
"We definitely need to move the ball better. We're going to focus on working together as a team more and playing efficiently on offence," finished Dunn.
SFU will head out on a two-game road trip first facing the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders in Nampa, ID on
January 23 at 7:00 p.m.
