Clan Loses 3-0 To Nationally Ranked Vikings

Home loss to rival Vikings brings disappointing season to end.

BURNABY, B.C. - Nationally ranked Western Washington University Vikings scored twice in the first half and added another in the second to defeat Simon Fraser University 3-0 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Saturday at Terry Fox Field.

It was the 10th straight loss for the Clan. Simon Fraser finishes with a 2-12-0 record in the GNAC and 2-16-0 overall.

"We played hard and we played one of our best games of the season in spite of the score," said Clan head coach Annie Hamel. "We made a couple of errors that resulted in goals and we didn't capitalize on our opportunities. It is super disappointing but we competed, we pushed forward and we went for our chances."

The Vikings scored goals in the 25th, 36th and 79th minutes for the victory that preserved their unbeaten season. The Vikings, No.14 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll and No.1 in the West Region, improved to 15-0-3 overall and captured the GNAC regular-season title for the third straight year with an 11-0-3 record.

"It takes time to change a culture and execute the vision we have," said Hamel after completing her first season coaching the Clan. "We have come a long way and we have a very long way to go. We have made progress but it is not enough."

"Our mentality is where we have had to do the most growth and work the hardest," she continued. "In the last four games we started competing better and having a little extra grit but we are not there yet."

It was the final game for three seniors, midfielder Jessica Marano (Burnaby, BC), defender Kelsey Atherley (Port Moody, BC) and midfielder Aja Choy-Halo (Nanaimo, BC).

"I wanted something better and to have more success for them and that is something I will always feel bad about," said Hamel. "I wanted to send them off on a much more positive note by finally producing a winning season. I wanted that for them. They have shown great leadership all season and can't say enough about them."
