Clan alumni set for Commonwealth Games

Glasgow, Scotland - Three Simon Fraser University Clan alumni are representing Canada at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland as Jessica Smith (North Vancouver, BC) will run in the 800-metre while Danielle Lappage (Olds, AB) and Arjun Gill (Surrey, BC) will both wrestle at the Games.

Clan graduate Smith was a 16-time NAIA Champion during her collegiate career with the Clan and was an NAIA All-American numerous times. She holds the school record in the 800-metre.

Smith represented Canada at the London Olympics in 2012 where she reached the semi-final and also competed at the FISU Games in Russia last summer.

She has represented Canada at the Pan-American Junior Championships, IAAF World Junior Championships and in 2010 she won a gold medal at the NACAC U-23 Championships.

Lappage was a four time Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association Champion at Simon Fraser and won the 2014 Senior World Team Trials.

She also won the 2011 Junior World Championships and recently captured the World University Championship in her weight class, helping Team Canada to the team title.

Lappage, a two time senior Canadian champion, is currently in the master's program for criminology at SFU.

Gill recently won the 2014 Canadian Championship and won a Canadian Junior Championship in 2011.

He also finished second at the Canadian Championship in 2013.

With the Clan in 2012, Gill captured the NCWA West Region Championship and advanced to the NCWA National Championship.

Smith will run the first heat of the 800-metre on Wednesday morning at 4:06 a.m. PST while Gill will wrestle in the quarter-final at 97-kg at 3:18 a.m. PST. Lappage will start her competition on Thursday at a time to be announced.
