TACOMA, WA – Four Simon Fraser University freshman swimmers and one senior won two races each to lift the Clan men's and women's teams to victory over the University of Puget Sound Saturday in a dual meet at Wallace Pool in Tacoma.
Freshmen
Adrian VanderHelm,
Gabriel Lee, and
Tim Woinoski all won two races each to lift the Clan men to a 156-100 win while freshman
Maran Kokoszka and senior
Carmen Nam won two races apiece to push the Clan women's team to a 151-102 victory.
The Clan won 25 of the 28 races contested.
VanderHelm, a native of Barrie, ON, won the 100-meter breaststroke (1:08.25) and the 100-meter butterfly (57:09). Earlier this season VanderHelm became the first Clan swimmer to qualify for the NCAA Division II national championships after surpassing the "A" standard in the 200-meter freestyle at the Clan Cup International. The NCAA national championships take place March 11-14 in Indianapolis, IN.
Lee, from Delta, BC, was first in the 100-meter backstroke in a time of 57.50, easily beating teammate
Keenan Elliott and breaking a 1996 record. Lee also won the 200-meter individual medley (2:13.14).
Woinoski won the 200-meter butterfly in a time of 2:13.53 and the 400-meter freestyle in 4:08.49.
The SFU men's 200-meter freestyle relay team comprised of
Hans Heyer,
Justin Kiedrzyn,
Saveli Yungman and Dimita Ivanov also set a new pool record, winning in 1:36.52, three full seconds ahead of UPS.
On the women's side, Nam (Hong Kong) finished first in the 800-meter freestyle (9:19.48) and the 100-meter butterfly (1:06.39) while Kokoszka (Qualicum Beach, BC) took top spot in the 200-meter freestyle edging Melissa Norrish of UPS by 18/100s of a second. Her winning time was 2:10.40. Kokoszka won the 200-meter backstroke in 2:24.40.
In the 100-meter free
Nicole Cossey set a new pool record, winning in 57.78, breaking the 1997 record held by former Clan swimmer Karen Chow.
The women's 200-meter medley team comprised of
Grace Ni,
Brianna Bailey,
Alexandria Schofield and Cossey broke a 1994 record held by the University of Washington, winning in 2:02.82.
