Clan Falls 3-1 to Concordia

Simon Fraser University found themselves on the losing end of a 3-1 decision against the Concordia Cavaliers, dropping their record to 4-2-2 overall.

BURNABY, BC – On Saturday afternoon, Simon Fraser University found themselves on the losing end of a 3-1 decision against the Concordia Cavaliers in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game, dropping their record to 4-2-2 overall.
 
Concordia scored twice early in the second half to break open the game and pick up a road victory.
 
McKayla Madison put the Cavaliers ahead for good on a penalty shot in the 61st minute. She capitalized on her chance with a hard shot to the bottom left portion of the net beating Clan goalkeeper Priya Sandhu.
 
Maddie Prehoda added to the lead with a goal coming off a desperate scramble in front of the Clan's net four minutes later to cement the victory.
 
With today's defeat, Simon Fraser is now 4-2-2 (2-2-1 in the GNAC). It was the fifth victory of the season for Concordia, now 5-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the GNAC. Concordia owns the second best record in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

"We came up against a physical, hardworking team," said SFU coach Annie Hamel. "We couldn't at any point match their physicality, and it just looked like Concordia wanted it more."
 
"Concordia has won championships before and has a different mentality. We're young and still learning what it takes to win."
 
Sydney Van Steenberge opened up the scoring for Concordia in the 16th minute. She worked her way through the Clan's defense, creating a breakaway chance for herself. 
 
Carli Grosso scored the lone goal for the Clan in the 25th minute off of a corner kick. Sierra Leung crossed the ball in off the set piece, setting Grosso up with an opportunity to head the ball in.
 
"I liked how we were able to bounce back after falling behind early in the first half," said Hamel.
 
Simon Fraser was coming off a 1-0 victory against Montana State University Billings on Thursday.
 
Simon Fraser's next opponent is Saint Martin's. The game is scheduled for October 8th on Terry Fox Field beginning at 5:00 PM. Saint Martin's currently holds a record of 1-7-0, placing them last in the conference.
 
Western Washington leads the conference with a 8-1-0 overall record heading into Saturday's action.
 
Simon Fraser fired 17 shots towards Concordia University goalie Olivia Brock, forcing her to make 9 saves. Sandhu faced 17 shots directed towards the Clan goal and made 3 saves.
 
Sandhu now owns a record of 4-2-2 this season.
 
SFU took 7 corner kicks while the Cavaliers had 4.
