SALVADOR, Brazil – Simon Fraser University sophomore Mallory Velte lost her bronze medal match at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and placed fifth on the final day of women's freestyle at the UWW Junior World Championships.
 
Velte, from Sacramento, Calif., was competing for the United States. She fell in her bronze medal bout to Canada's Braxton Stone-Papadopoulos, 4-2. Stone-Papodopoulos is now a two-time Junior World medalist, with a silver medal in 2013 and a bronze in 2015.
 
In the first period, Stone-Papadopoulos got two points, one on the shot clock against Velte and one on a pushout. In the last 10 seconds in the period, Velte scored a double leg takedown to tie it up at 2-2. In the second period, referees put Velte on the shot clock again, and Stone scored a counter-takedown on a spin behind for the final 4-2 margin.
 
Velte missed last season with an injury but has wrestled well all spring and summer, winning the trial for the USA to qualify for the world championships. Velte was an All-American in her first year at SFU after winning the California high school championship.
 
"Given that Mallory has only had 12 matches in the past year her results against world class competition are exciting," said Clan head coach Mike Jones.
 
Velte opened the tournament against the defending champion from Russia, losing a close 10 to 7 contest. This opponent went on to win her second title.
