HILO, HAWAI'I – An early second-half goal by
Olivia Aguiar proved to be the only offense Simon Fraser University needed to defeat Hawaii Pacific 1-0 in a women's soccer game, amid heavy rain Saturday afternoon at UH Hilo's baseball field.
Olivia Aguiar's goal, which was set up by
Christina Dickson's pass in the 52nd minute, kept the Clan unbeaten to start the season. SFU improved its record to 2-0-1. The Sharks fell to 1-2.
"I'm very happy for the girls to have come all the way here and stay undefeated on the season because winning on the road is not easy," said Clan head coach
Annie Hamel.
"They showed me a lot during this trip, they are determined to be successful," added Hamel. "I have a group that is very strong mentally, believe in each other, and they'll never leave the fight. It's a young group but a special group."
HPU received three saves from goalkeeper Kelby Boswell, but with a lack of scoring on the offensive end, Simon Fraser's lone goal stood as the difference in this neutral-site matchup.
SFU out-shot the Sharks 5-3 in the contest.
"We still we have a lot to work on when we get back home," added Hamel. "We have some adjustments to make especially in the last third of the pitch and we need to be better putting games away."
Simon Fraser keeper
Priya Sandhu made one save in the contest to pick-up the shutout.
SFU returns home to open its Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule with a road game at Seattle Pacific on Sept. 19.
