BURNABY, BC –
Christina Dickson scored twice and her twin sister Allyson added another to lift Simon Fraser University to a 3-1 season-opening win over Humboldt State University in a non-conference women's soccer game Saturday evening on Terry Fox Field.
It is the first time since 2010 that Simon Fraser has won its season opener and the Clan went 11-5-3 that year, its only winning season in NCAA. Last year the Clan lost its first six games to start the season, including a 4-2 loss to Humboldt State.
Christina Dickson scored her second of the game 20 minutes into the second half. Defender
Mikela Fong sent a long cross into the penalty area that found the foot of Dickson and she fired the ball into the bottom right corner for the game winner. Dickson opened the scoring in the 14
th minute, accepting a pass from her sister and volleying a shot into the top left corner.
Five minutes after Dickson opened the scoring Humboldt State evened the score. HSU midfielder Bridget Daley got her head on a cross from Alex Jenkins, directing the ball past Clan keeper
Priya Sandhu.
Allyson Dickson iced the game in the 89
th minute when she managed to get a boot on a 30-yard free kick from
Teagan Rae Sorokan, directing the ball past Caitlin Loss-Plese. The Clan hasn't scored three goals in a game since the 2010 season when it posted a 3-0 win over Central Washington.
The sisters are both freshmen from Burnaby. Allyson was the winner of the 2014 BC Secondary School Soccer Golden Boot award. Loss-Plese had to be sharp all game long as the Clan directed 18 shots her way. She made five saves in the game. Clan keeper Sandhu also made five saves in the contest.
SFU had an 18-9 advantage in shot attempts
SFU plays a pair of games in Hawaii before returning home to open its Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule with a road game at Seattle Pacific on Sept. 19.
