SEATTLE, WA - The SFU Clan women's soccer team (6-5-1, 4-4-0) suffered a blow to their playoff hopes on Saturday, falling 3-0 to the Seattle Pacific Falcons (8-2-3, 5-1-2) on the road in Seattle, WA.
The Clan were bitten gashed by an opportunistic Seattle Pacific side, and ran into a goalkeeper in top form in the Falcons' Molly Stinson. Despite racking up 19 shots, seven of which made it to the Falcons keeper, none got past. Freshman
Emma Pringle led the Clan with three shots, while seven other players had two.
"Simply put, we made mistakes, and they capitalized on them. We had chances, 19 of them in fact, and could not produce a goal," said SFU head coach
Annie Hamel. "Consistency is key, and we don't have that – it's been the story of our season."
The game got off on the wrong foot for SFU, as SPU's leading scorer Hannah Heusers got on the board less than four minute into the contest. The forward took a through ball from Maddie Krauss and walked in alone on SFU goalkeeper
Priya Sandhu, tucking it inside the right post from 10 yards out.
The Falcons got an insurance marker from Brooke Lancaster, who deposited a shot from the left flank, 12 yards out, at the game's 20-minute mark. Julia DeVere capped the scoring and sealed the result for SPU in the second half.
With the loss, the Clan sit firmly in fifth in the GNAC standings, two points back of the fourth-place Concordia Cavaliers (9-2-2, 4-2-2), who occupy that coveted final playoff spot. While the loss to SPU hurt, it wasn't a death blow to SFU's post-season hopes. However, the margin for error becomes razor thin as the Clan head into the final third of their conference schedule.
An all-important matchup with Concordia will take place this Thursday, October 20, as the two sides are set to throw down on Terry Fox Field at 4:30 pm.
