INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Sophomore Adrian VanderHelm clocked the fifth fastest time in NCAA Division II history in the 500 yard freestyle to finish third and earn All-American Honours in his third individual event at the 2016 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday.

Simon Fraser's VanderHelm, freshman MacKenzie Hamill, both in the 500 free, and sophomore Lauren Swistak, in the 200 butterfly, earned All-American honours on Friday. The Clan foursome of VanderHelm, Hamill, sophomore Gabriel Lee and freshman Colton Peterson also earned All-American honours in the 800 yard freestyle relay by finishing seventh.

The top eight swimmers or teams in any event receive All-American honours.

In the 500 free, VanderHelm finished behind Dutch Olympian Dion Dreesens of Queens, and Russian national team swimmer Victor Polyakov (West Chester), the same two competitors he trailed in the 1000 free earlier in the meet when he placed third.

VanderHelm was clocked in 4:21.04 to set a new Clan all-time record in the 500 free. Hamill was fifth in 4:24.39, earning All-American honours in his second event at nationals. Hamill also eclipsed the old SFU record of 4:28.08 set by Tomi Lannto in 1991.

VanderHelm and Hamill were ranked 4th and 5th, respectively, in the 500 free entering the meet.

Dreesens, a junior from Venray, Netherlands, broke the meet record he had set Friday morning, when he handily won the 500-yard men's freestyle event in 4:17.09. He had just set the new meet mark in the morning preliminaries with a time of 4:20.7. Dreesens also won the 200 and 1000 free events earlier this week competing against VanderHelm.

Polyakov, who was the record-holder in the event with a mark of 4:20.26 set in 2013, was second in the 500 free in 4.20.33, just ahead of VanderHelm (4:21.04).

The 800 yard freestyle foursome finished seventh but clocked a new Clan all-time record in the event. Their final time was 6:34.32. Queens set a record in winning the race in 6:23.62.

Swistak actually swam the fastest 200 yard butterfly in SFU history. Her prelim swim was a new SFU record, breaking Carmen Nam's swim from last year's nationals. Swistak was over 5 seconds faster than her swim from last year when she placed 19th in the event at nationals, and 8 seconds faster than her freshman performance in 2014 where she was last in the preliminaries.

Swistak finished seventh in the final to become an All-American for the first time in an individual race.

Swistak was clocked in 2:02.45 in the morning prelims to advance to the finals where she finished in 2:02.97. If Swistak had repeated her morning swim in the finals she would have placed fifth. Junior Sofia Petrenko of Wingate won the race in a record 1:57.94 while SFU freshman Alicia Kan was 23rd (2:10.13).

SFU senior Justin Kiedrzyn (12th) and Gabriel Lee (14th) also scored points for the men's team by finishing in the top 16 in the 200 yard butterfly. Kiedrzyn finished in 1:48.42 and Lee was clocked in 1:49.90.

Overall, Queens University (N.C.) leads both the men's and women's team standings. SFU is 11th with 119 points but has a shot to crack the top 10 with strong swims on Saturday. SFU is trailing 10th place West Chester (120.5 points) and ninth place Tampa (129).

Sophomore Maran Kokoszka was 26th in the 100 yard backstroke in 57.69. The Clan women's 800 freestyle relay team of Kokoszka, Swistak, freshman Robyn Lee and freshman Alicia Kan was 16th in 7:40.34.

The final day of competition is Saturday with preliminary rounds for swimming events each day at 7:30 AM PT at the Natatorium and finals at 3 PM PT.
