Adrian VanderHelm and freshman
MacKenzie Hamill delivered All-American performances, lifting the Simon Fraser University men's team to 11th overall after Day 1 of the 2016 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
"It's good to be All-American in my first race," said Hamill. "I am hoping to build on this and to keep improving on my performances throughout the competition."
VanderHelm broke a long-standing SFU all-time record not once, but twice, today, finishing fifth in the 200 yard individual medley. VanderHelm narrowly beat David Hibberd's 2011 school record by 9/100th of a second (1:47.46 to 1:47.55) in the morning preliminaries to qualify for the evening final. He lowered that mark in the finals when he finished fifth in 1:47.07.
The first six swimmers were separated by three seconds. Victor Polyakov (West Chester) won the 200 IM race in a time of 1:44.95.
Clan freshman
Colton Peterson did not qualify for the finals in the event. He finished 28th with a time of 1:51.73.
One of SFU's oldest records - the 1000 yard freestyle mark set by Clan Hall of Famer Eugene Gyorfi in 1983 - was broken twice within 15 minutes on Wednesday.
Sophomore
Tim Woinoski finished his heat in 9:18.30, breaking Gyorfi's mark of 9:32.20 by 14 seconds. Fifteen minutes later Hamill took the pool for his heat in the 1,000 yard freestyle touching home in 9:11.69 to set a new school standard. Hamill was fifth overall and Woinoski placed 14th in the race.
Dion Dreesens of Queens was first in 9:01.79.
VanderHelm and Hamill earned 14 points each for the men's team for finishing fifth while Woinoski earned three points for his 14
th place finish.
Simon Fraser sits 11th with 31 points. Queens sits atop the men's leaderboard with 88 points, followed by Lindenwood University with 77.5 and Nova Southeastern University with 65.
Queens also leads the women's standings with 127 points, followed by Drury University with 86 and Wingate University with 79. The Clan women did not have any top 16 finishes on Day 1 and did not pick up any team points.
Clan senior
Justin Kiedrzyn was 29th in the 50 free after being clocked in 20.52. Serghei Golban of Lindenwood set a new record of 19.35 in the championship final race.
The SFU women's 200 medley relay team of
Maran Kokoszka,
Meaghan Frenks,
Alicia Kan and
Robyn Lee finished 20th overall. The men's 200 medley relay team of
Gabriel Lee, Peterson, Kiedrzyn and Hamill placed 19th (1:32.81).
Lauren Swistak was 29th in the women's 1000 freestyle in 10:28.77.
Competition continues through Sunday, with preliminary rounds for swimming events each day at 7:30 AM PT at the Natatorium and finals at 3 PM PT. A complete schedule of events may be found at
