Back in fall 2015, SFU students voted "yes" to build the Student Union Building (SUB) and Stadium, and both projects are in the final stages of completion. While the pandemic slowed construction timelines, the SUB is in the final inspection phase and the Stadium is now scheduled to be completed in early 2021. In 2015, students voted 86 per cent in favour of approving construction of the SUB while 81 per cent of students cast a yes vote in favour of building a stadium.
The grand opening for the SUB hasn't been announced. It is awaiting health protocols due to COVID-19. The SUB will feature lots of exciting active spaces for social gathering, lounging, activities, and celebrating.
The SUB is a beautiful architectural structure, designed by Perkins & Will Architects, the same company that has designed the Stadium. The SUB is located on the south side of Freedom Square. The 10,280 square meter (110,750 square feet) building will be entirely devoted to students with lounges, study areas, meeting rooms and recreational facilities. Some of the key features include a napping room, an online gaming lounge, Club Centre, a live performance stage, music rooms, and a community kitchen.
The napping room is intended for students to rest and relax, and will contain soft seating such as lounge chairs and modular sofas. The room will be acoustically treated to provide for a quieter environment.
There is a gamers lounge for online gaming. The room will be equipped with digital displays, gaming consoles and power / data for individual gaming.
The Club Centre is a resource room for clubs, departmental student unions and student organizations. The room will include a staffed information desk, graphic computer stations, soft seating and printers.
The Social Stage lounge includes a stage and DJ booth for organized student events such as karaoke, live music or other SFSS events.
In keeping with SFU's sustainability efforts, the SUB is targeting LEED gold certification, which is the second-highest rating in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system.
