BURNABY, BC --- On Thursday night, former Simon Fraser University Football Receiver
Rysen John was selected in the 3rd round of the CFL draft, 21st overall by the Calgary Stampeders.
It has been less than a week since
Rysen John was signed by the New York Giants of the NFL to an un-drafted free agent contract, and while the NFL is certainly top of mind for John, being selected by Calgary provides John with yet another opportunity to pursue his pro football career in life after SFU.
This past season, John led the GNAC in receiving yards (861), receiving touchdowns (10) and total receptions (53), and will join Simon Fraser Football Alumni
Brad Erdos and Ante Milanovic-litre in Calgary.
John was one of only two GNAC players selected in the CFL draft this year, with Western Oregon defensive lineman Court Hammond being the other pick (Hammond was selected 23rd overall to the BC Lions). John is also the highest pick an SFU Football Alum has received since
Michael Couture was taken with the 10th pick of the 2016 draft by Winnipeg
Overall, John is the 27th player to get drafted to the CFL from the Simon Fraser Football program in the past 15 years. Following the draft, Rysen explained why he felt the Stampeders would be a good fit: "I am definitely blessed for another opportunity if for whatever reason the NFL doesn't work out. I'm in a great situation, and Calgary is a great organization that has won on a consistent basis with a Grey Cup pedigree".
