Giuliana Zaurrini scores a goal and two assists in 3-0 SFU win in Oregon

BURNABY, B.C. – The Simon Fraser women's soccer team played an outstanding match on both sides of the ball as they won 3-0 over Western Oregon, Thursday in Monmouth, Ore. Giuliana Zaurrini had herself a game, walking away with a goal and two to lead her squad to victory against the Wolves.

SFU's record now stands at 3-6-1 (4-3-0 GNAC) after capturing its first away game win of the season. The team's conference mark includes a forfeit by Northwest Nazarene (Idaho) that is not counted in the overall record.

The match started out with both sides producing strong offensive attacks. In the 13th-minute, a would-be first goal was taken back after a delayed offside was called against SFU, keeping the teams scoreless.

In the 39th minute, Zaurrini drilled a corner kick straight to teammate Emma Ferraro, who headed the ball into the net past WOU goalkeeper Emily Wheeler for the first goal of her collegiate career. The eventual game winner allowed Simon Fraser to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

SFU came out of halftime aggressive on offence. Just over a minute into the second half, Zaurrini delivered another corner kick, which deflected to Mackenzie Almeida, who fired a shot from just outside of the six-yard box. Wheeler made a nice save with her left foot, but the rebound was tapped into the net by Raegan Mackenzie for her second goal of the season, and a 2-0 SFU advantage.

In the 65th minute, Zaurrini intercepted a partial WOU clearance at the right edge of the penalty area and one-timed the ball into the top corner from a sharp angle. The sophomore's first goal of the season capped off the scoring for the visitors.

SFU's strong efforts on both sides of the ball allowed them to walk out of Western Oregon with the 3-0 shutout win. In her first start of the campaign, goalkeeper Nicole Anderson made one save to earn the clean sheet, the eighth of her career.

SFU women's soccer looks to keep its momentum rolling to Saturday as they travel to Western Washington to take on the 23rd-ranked Vikings.
