BURNABY – Taylor Nekic scored a header off a corner kick four minutes from fulltime to give the University of Fraser Valley a 1-0 win over SFU in front of 640 fans, spoiling the women's soccer team's home debut at the new SFU Stadium at Terry Fox Field.
The home crowd was boosted by a local promotion with Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club where its youth players, coaches and their families came out to cheer on five CMF alumni in the SFU lineup, and enjoy donuts and hot chocolate courtesy of Tim Hortons.
The local derby was a tightly contested game with few chances on either side until UFV won a corner in the 86
th minute. Amy Connorton sent a well-placed ball into the near side penalty area. Nekic came running to the ball and headed it far post, lower corner for the game-winner.
Prior to that the best chance for Fraser Valley came midway through the second half when a Fraser Valley defender sent a powerful shot from distance off the cross bar and the rebound was mis-kicked high over the goal.
UFV had a slight advantage in shots 12 to 9 and a 6-3 advantage in corners.
SFU had several chances to get on the scoreboard.
Annika Gross sent a long shot on goal that was stopped by goalkeeper Joven Saandhu midway through the second half.
Giuliana Zaurrini sent a dangerous corner through the penalty area in 75
th minute that just sailed over the head of two SFU players in full attack running onto the ball. It was a near miss and kept the teams scoreless until the 86
th minute.
Kelsey Fisher made her third straight start, making four saves. Saandhu made three saves for UFV.
The loss drops SFU to 0-2-1 in non-conference action to start the season.
SFU will play at home in SFU Stadium on Sept. 16 in another local derby against UBC. Game time is 7:30PM.
