Zaurrini’s early goal delivers SFU’s first GNAC win

BURNABY – Simon Fraser University turned a goal scored seconds into the game into its first win of the season, 2-1 over Saint Martin's Saturday afternoon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at SFU Stadium at Terry Fox Field.

It was SFU's first GNAC win in the new stadium.

Giuliana Zaurrini scored her first of the season 33 seconds into the contest when she brought a quick pass from Emily Smith into control, turned a defender to create space, took a few strides and then rocketed a shot from 25 yards that sailed over goalkeeper Sophie Mendoza.

The quick strike from distance surprised Mendoza who was unable to race back to her line to stop the shot.

It was SFU's third goal of the season and it ignited the team, which came in waves at Saint Martin's trying to extend its lead in the first half. The front three of Zaurrini, Kiara Buono and Raegan Mackenzie pressed forward to create dangerous opportunities throughout the half.

SFU directed four shots on goal in the half and scored again in the 41st minute when Kate Cartier took a set-up from Jenieva Musico and found the back of the net for her goal goal of the season.

On the goal, SFU took possession in midfield when Katie Richardson won a ball and sent a pass across the field to Musico. She one-timed the pass high, across the field again, into Cartier racing down the left flank, marked by two defenders. Cartier took the pass between the defenders, and took several strides before poking the ball past Mendoza, who was out to challenge, low to the far corner.

With a 2-0 lead SFU substituted it goalies 20 minutes from full-time, giving Nicole Anderson her first action this season. Kelsey Fisher, who had played every minute of every game to that point, had made one save in the game. Anderson started 14 of 16 games during the 2019 season as a sophomore.

Saint Martin's scored on a penalty kick against Anderson low to the right side in the 88th minute. Anderson guessed right but the ball was just out of her reach. SMU earned the PK when SFU's Emily Smith, the lone defender back, mishandled a ball under pressure, intending to push it back to the goalkeeper. An SMU player raced on to it and Smith brought her down in the box.

SFU is now 1-4-1 (1-1 GNAC) while SMU is 1-1 in the GNAC.

SFU will play at home in SFU Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 30 against Northwest Nazarene. Game time is 5:00PM.
