Swimmers open season with strong performances in California

STOCKTON, Calif. – SFU had a strong performance Saturday morning on the first day of racing season at the Pacific Invitational as the Red Leafs went head-to-head with the University of Nevada and the hosts, University of the Pacific, in the Chris Kjeldsen Pool.

The Red leafs won two individual races and one relay, and finished second in five of 16 races.

SFU swept the first two places in the 50-yard free. Jordan Doner won the race in 23.86 seconds and Abigail Williams was right behind her in 24.04. The lone winner on the men's side in racing Saturday was Channah Yip in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.06. Yip also placed second in the 400 individual medley in 4:16.34.

The women's foursome of Tori Meklensek, Isabelle Roth, Jordan Doner and Abby Williams closed out the first day winning the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay by four seconds in 3:33.84.

The women's team opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, with a finishing time of 1:46.82 from Kaysha Bikadi,  Isabelle Roth,  Williams and Jordan Doner. The men's team race, SFU was second in 3:06.84.

The Red Leafs placed second in the women's 100-yard breaststroke, with Roth finishing in 1:05.34, just behind winner Wiktoria Samula (Nevada) in 1:05.16. The Red Leafs were second in the 200-yard free with Tori Meklensek getting edged at the wall 1:54.28 to 1:54.51 by Nevada's Mari Vignoli.
 
SFU returns to the pool tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 2 at 10a.m. to finish up the Pacific Invite against Pacific and Nevada.
