Red Leafs play No. 25-ranked Nighthawks to scoreless draw

BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser Red Leafs played No. 25-ranked Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks to a scoreless draw in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer action on Thursday evening at SFU Stadium at Terry Fox Field.

The game featured momentum swings throughout the contest but it was the Nighthawks who had the game's best chance when Makayla Roggow sent a penalty kick wide right in the 74th minute.

Both teams had quality chances throughout the game but the goaltenders provided coverage to earn their shutouts. Northwest Nazarene has not conceded a goal in nine straight matches and now has a 13-match unbeaten streak.

SFU 'keeper Nicole Anderson faced 10 shots, making six saves to earn her second shutout in seven starts. SFU fired 13 shots at Nighthawks goalie Alexis Montoya who stopped five.

SFU is now 2-2-2 in its last six contests and with the single point leaped over Western Oregon into fourth place in the conference standings. SFU has a 3-6-6 overall record, 2-5-4 in the conference. The Nighthawks sit in second place in the GNAC with a 10-1-4 record, 8-0-3 in the conference. It is one of two teams to have secured a spot in the 2022 GNAC Championships.

SFU will play Central Washington on Saturday at SFU Stadium, beginning at 1 p.m. The final home game for the Red Leafs is Thursday, Oct. 27 against Saint Martin's when the team will honour its seniors. That game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
