Red Leafs headed back to GNAC Women’s Soccer Championship

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Simon Fraser Red Leafs are headed back to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship after holding Western Oregon to a scoreless draw Saturday afternoon on McArthur Field.

Simon Fraser entered the final day of the regular season in fourth place in the GNAC with a one-point lead over Western Oregon. The Red Leafs needed either a win or a draw to advance to the post season for the second straight season and fourth time in head coach Annie Hamel's tenure.

SFU settled for a draw. Goalkeeper Nicole Anderson turned aside all five shots she faced and the Red Leafs blanketed the Wolves offense. WOU directed 20 shots at the SFU goal. SFU directed seven shots at the Western Oregon goal but none were on target.

WOU's best chance came in the 61st minute as a pass down the right side found Briana Kubli and she took the ball to her left, got an opening and took a shot toward the left side of the goal. Anderson made a diving play to push the ball out of bounds and deny the Wolves' opportunity and pick up her fourth shutout of the season.

Corner kicks were six apiece and each team had 10 fouls.

SFU finished the regular season with a 5-6-7 overall record, 4-5-5 in the conference. The Wolves were 7-6-5 overall, and 4-6-4 in GNAC play.

SFU will enter the GNAC Championship as the fourth seed and face top seed Western Washington in one semifinal. Northwest Nazarene and Seattle Pacific will be in the other semifinal.

This year's championship will be held Nov. 3-5 on the campus of Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho.  The semifinal games on Thursday, Nov. 3 will be at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The semifinal winners will meet in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 5.

The No. 5 ranked Western Washington was dealt just its second loss of the season in a 2-1 setback to Western Oregon on Thursday.

All tickets to the championship must be purchased through this online ticket portal, whether purchased in advance or at the competition venue on game day. There will be no cash sales at the site.
