Seiber, offense electric as Red Leafs rout Buffaloes in season finale

Burnaby, BC - Welcome to the Lone Star Conference, Simon Fraser.

The SFU Red Leafs football team (1-8 overall, 1-8 LSC) capped off their inaugural LSC season in remarkable fashion on Saturday evening at SFU Stadium, blowing out the West Texas A&M Buffaloes (5-6, 3-6) 46-14 behind an all-world showing from quarterback Justin Seiber, just one of several outstanding performances during the evening.

At a game where SFU honoured its senior class, the entire team came together to make it a night to remember.

SFU's signal caller posted easily the best stat line of his Red Leafs career, going 24-of-34 for 293 yards, five touchdowns and no picks. Seiber only took one sack amidst a dominant showing from the offensive line, and was throwing deep with touch, accuracy, and velocity.

The five touchdown passes in a single game ties Seiber for second all-time amongst SFU pivots, trailing only Trey Wheeler's six scores against Dixie State College as a part of his All-GNAC 2012 campaign.

Deserving no less credit, SFU's receiving corps was electric – Sam Davenport hauled in seven balls for a game-high 156 yards and a major, while Ethan Beselt snagged nine catches for 105 yards and two scores. Robert Meadors was invaluable, as the senior notched six receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown. Not to be left out, running back Somto Anyadike netted 82 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.

SFU didn't even send out their punting unit in the first half, leading 32-7 at the break, as the Red Leafs scored on their first seven drives of the contest, a run that included six touchdowns, a field goal, and a safety.

And that safety serves as point of emphasis – as good as Seiber and the offense was, the Red Leafs defense may have been as good. Collectively racking up five sacks, including the Tank Brewster-induced safety, SFU's defense held the Buffaloes to just 3.27 yards per play. The SFU secondary made life difficult at every turn, with Jerrell Cummings, Damon Lynch, and Ryan Barthelson all breaking up passes and both Barthelson and Evan Currie picking off Buffaloes QB Caleb Arreola.
SFU cruised past that mid-way mark of the third, eventually rolling in their backups as they claimed the 46-14 win. The Red Leafs will look to carry the full momentum from this contest into the long-awaited return of the Shrum Bowl next month.

With support from the CFL's BC Lions, the Red Leafs are set to once again host their cross-town rival UBC Thunderbirds on Friday, December 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at SFU Stadium.

Reserved covered seating for Shrum Bowl 34 is sold out and a few hundred reserved uncovered seats remain, and can be purchased here. There are approximately 200 SFU/FIC student field level tickets available that can be reserved for free with valid SFU ID here.

Established in 1967, the rivalry game between SFU and UBC has been played intermittently over the past 45 years, and last took place in 2010. That 2010 clash saw SFU take a 27-20 decision over the Thunderbirds and with it, SFU also holds a slight advantage all-time, with a 17-15-1 record in the series.
