SFU relocates four homes games to Blaine, Washington

8/16/2022 11:00:00 AM

BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser University has made the decision to relocate four home football games from SFU Stadium at Terry Fox Field to Blaine, Washington, due to the continuing impact of the global pandemic and the Canada-USA border restriction that requires all visitors entering Canada to be fully vaccinated.

Four home games will now be played at Blaine High School: Texas A&M-Kingsville (Oct. 1), Western New Mexico (Oct. 22), Angelo State (Oct. 29), and West Texas A&M (Nov. 12). The non-conference game against Montana State-Northern (Sept. 10) has been cancelled.

All four games in Blaine will begin at 6 p.m., and will be live streamed. Blaine is situated in the northwest corner of Washington State, adjacent to the Canada-USA border. It is 45 kilometres from SFU Burnaby. The stadium features artificial turf and covered seating for 2,000 fans.

"We are all looking forward to a time when the impact of the global pandemic will be behind us," said Theresa Hanson, Senior Director of Athletics and Recreation at SFU. "This news is especially disappointing for our student-athletes, but we continue to support them and advocate for ways to ensure they can train and compete. We are looking forward to creating a home-field atmosphere in Blaine for these games."

In November 2021, SFU and Great Northwest Athletic Conference football schools Central Washington and Western Oregon were unanimously accepted by Lone Star Conference Presidents and Athletic Directors as affiliate members, creating a 10-team conference in football. With only three NCAA Division II football schools remaining in the Pacific Northwest, this was an essential move to guarantee a full conference schedule for football.

Simon Fraser has two scheduled home games at SFU Stadium remaining, against Central Washington on Saturday, Sept. 17 (1 p.m.) and the Shrum Bowl against UBC on Friday, Dec. 2 (6 p.m.). Training camp for football opened on Monday, August 8 with more than 100 student-athletes preparing for the upcoming season. Football ticketing options are on sale now. Shrum Bowl tickets will go on sale at a later date. Please visit our SFU Athletics Tickets tab for more info.

The pandemic impacted SFU's 2021 football schedule as well. The team played two home games and six road games. The 2020 season was cancelled across all sports at SFU due to the pandemic.
