Sarah Loewen earns clean sheet as Red Leafs and Nighthawks draw in crucial GNAC contest

BURNABY, B.C. – The SFU Red Leafs carried play for most of the afternoon on Saturday, but excellent performances from both goalkeepers saw Canada's NCAA team play to a scoreless draw on the road against the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks.

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer match featured the team holding the fourth and final playoff spot in SFU against the squad in fifth.

The Red Leafs' Sarah Loewen (So., Burnaby, B.C.) notched her sixth clean sheet of the 2023 NCAA season with a three-save showing. The Nighthawks' Bailey Blancett was the busier of the two netminders, as the Red Leafs had six shots on goal, including a final opportunity on a set piece in the game's waning moments.

With under two minutes to play, NNU's Makayla Roggow earned a red card after she hauled down an onrushing SFU attacker just outside the 18-yard box. Junior midfielder Kate Cartier (Kelowna, B.C.) stepped to the spot on the ensuing free kick. Though her initial attempt hit the wall, Cartier quickly smashed the rebound towards Blancett, who did well to deny SFU the game winner.

The match otherwise was fairly tight-knit, with neither side really getting much in the way of Grade-A scoring chances.

The Red Leafs outshot the hosts 10-7, and had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. 

Pocketing another point with their second draw of the weekend, SFU (4-4-4, 3-4-3 GNAC) maintained its two-point lead on the Nighthawks (4-4-6, 2-4-4 GNAC) in the chase for the final berth to the GNAC Women's Soccer Championships. The Red Leafs return home next week to host the Saint Martin's Saints and Western Oregon Wolves at the SFU Stadium on Terry Fox Field. 

The Red Leafs are set to take on the Saints in a 7 p.m. kickoff on Thursday, October 28, while the Wolves and Red Leafs will clash at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 30.
