Jesaiah Penson-McCoy runs record 100 for SFU

4/29/2023 10:22:00 PM

BURNABY, B.C. – Jesaiah Penson-McCoy put himself into the Simon Fraser track and field record book Saturday at the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational in Bellingham, Washington. The sophomore from Surrey, B.C., won the men's 100 meters by getting to the finish line in 10.63 seconds.

It is the fastest 100-meter time recorded with fully automatic timing in school history. The previous best was Kevin Tyler's 10.65, achieved in 1989. In 1978, Murray Delorme completed a hand-timed race in 10.4 seconds.

It was one of four event wins for the Red Leafs Saturday at Civic Stadium.

Penson-McCoy ran the anchor leg on SFU's winning 4x100-meter relay team. Sophomore Blake Furtado (Victoria, B.C.), sophomore Jeremy Belcher (New Westminster, B.C.) and senior Kaito Suzuki (Tokyo, Japan) joined him to post a time of 41.98, ahead of British Columbia, and Alaska Anchorage.

Javelin thrower Bryan Cortes improved on his NCAA provisional qualifying mark with a season-best performance. The junior from Port Coquitlam, B.C., placed second with a best throw that reached 59.69 meters.

SFU topped the field in the women's 800 meters, as sophomores Kate Cameron and Elizabeth Vanderput finished first and second, respectively. Cameron, from Nanaimo, B.C., crossed the finish line in 2:14.95, while Vanderput (Calgary) came through in a personal-best 2:15.19.

Sophomore Sydney Kania (Sydney, Australia) won the women's high jump by clearing 1.64 m.

Red Leafs athletes recorded a total of 13 personal-best performances on Saturday.

Next week, SFU will have competitors at three different meets: the Linfield Open in McMinnville, Oregon, the Portland Twilight in Oregon, and the Oxy Invitational in Los Angeles.
