SAN RAFAEL, Calif. –
Kate Cartier scored the game-winning goal in the second half for a 1-0 win over Dominican University Sunday afternoon at Kennelly Field and the SFU Red Leafs women's soccer team is unbeaten after two road games to start the season.
The Red Leafs controlled the early part of the second half and after consecutive corner kicks,
Kate Cartier chested down a long corner from freshman
Alyssa Clark and it bounced just inside the near post for a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute.
Mikayla Tupper nearly added to the SFU lead five minutes later as she took aim at an empty net from the middle of the box but a Penguin defender got her foot in front of the ball to keep the ball out of the net.
The Penguins were unable to generate many quality opportunities down the stretch as the Red Leafs dropped back into a compact defensive shape and sought to control possession after taking the advantage in the contest.
SFU has a win and draw and is unbeaten in its first two games for the first time since 2017. SFU will now have a few weeks off before it begins conference play against rival Western Washington on Sept. 21 in Bellingham, Wash.
Freshman
Alyssa Clark has made quite the impact in her first two games, playing the full 90 minutes in her NCAA debut on Friday and then setting up the game-winner and playing 82 minutes in her second game Sunday. She has played the fourth highest minutes of any position players. The midfielder from Port Coquitlam starred for Coquitlam Metro-Ford as a youth and is part of a highly-touted recruiting class.
Statistically the teams were nearly even with the Red Leafs (1-0-1) outshooting the Penguins (1-1-0) by one, but SFU put five shots on frame and earned five corners which proved the difference.
Goalkeeper
Sarah Loewen earned her second straight clean sheet for the Red Leafs.
