Game Recap: Soccer - W | | Aaron Martin

Katelyn Magdalinski’s first NCAA goal helps SFU earn a 1-1 draw

BURNABY, B.C. – Freshman Katelyn Magdalinski's first career goal came in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon, as her 87th-minute strike pulled the SFU Red Leafs women's soccer team even as part of a 1-1 draw in Lacey, Washington, with the Saint Martin's Saints.

A late corner gave the Red Leafs (2-2-2, 1-2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) the ball in prime scoring position. Katie Richardson (Ottawa) did well to keep the ball in play, putting a header into a crowded Saints (3-2-3, 2-2-2) box. Ricocheting off SMU's Jamine Biava, Magdalinksi, who is from Pitt Meadows, B.C., wasted no time in firing a one-touch ball in tight, catching Saints goalkeeper Flavia Burrell off guard.

Outside of the final result, the Red Leafs seemingly held the upper hand for the majority of the contest. SFU outshot the Saints 17-4 over the course of 90 minutes, and earned eight corners to SMU's zero.

The Saint Martin's goal came against the run of play just 20 minutes into the first half. On an impressive run down the right flank, Sierra Nees put a cross just past SFU 'keeper Sarah Loewen's (Burnaby, B.C.) reach, and Saints midfielder Ravyn Mummey was in perfect position to tap the ball into cage.

Loewen made one save in the match, while rookie Kiera Scott (Coquitlam, B.C.) led Canada's NCAA team with five shots.

Next week, SFU will finally host the first two home games of its GNAC schedule. The Red Leafs will open up with a clash against the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks (4-1-3, 2-1-1), with kick-off set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 5. SFU will then host the Central Washington Wildcats (2-6-0, 1-2-0) on Saturday, October 7, with the start set slated for 3 p.m. As part of Community Day, admission will be free of charge.
