Red Leafs sweep dual meets in California

BURNABY, B.C. – SFU's swim teams were dominant in a set of dual meets on Saturday afternoon. Taking on the host Cal State East Bay Pioneers, California Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, as well as the Southwestern Oregon Lakers, the Red Leafs went a combined 5-0 on the day.
 
The No. 16-ranked SFU women scored a 195-66 win over the Banana Slugs, a 218-39 win over the Lakers, and then edged out the 18th-ranked Pioneers 137-125 to complete the sweep. On the men's side, No. 18 SFU bested the Banana Slugs 200-62 and the Lakers 213-49.
 
The Red Leafs swept the fastest times in eight of the day's 14 races, with the men winning a stunning 13 events, and the Red Leafs women taking the top spot in nine.

SFU started out the day with a pair of wins in the 400-yard medley relay – the quartet of sophomore Abby Williams (St. John's, N.L.), sophomore Delrae Vetter (Medicine Hat, Alta.), sophomore Aly Whitmore (Newmarket, Ont.), and rookie Kayla Houlder (Milton, Ont.) bested the field in three minutes 53.93 seconds. Thomas Caruso (Lindell Beach, B.C.), Hayden Visscher (Edmonton), Marcus Mak (Victoria, B.C.), and Peter Morch (Lantzville, B.C.) paced the men with a time of 3:26.91. With the exception of sophomore Mak, the relay team was made up of first-year swimmers.
 
Morch also took top spot in 200-yard freestyle (1:46.10) and 100-yard butterfly (52.55 seconds), placing third in the 100-yard freestyle (48.11). The latter was won by Mak in 46.60. Mak took the 100-yard backstroke as well, in a 51.65 showing.
 
Caruso also won an individual event, as he finished the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:54.78. Sophomore Thomas Bakica (Whitehorse, Yukon) earned two of SFU's solo victories as he claimed the top spot in both the 100- (57.61) and 200-yard breaststrokes (2:06.07). Freshman Owen Nicholson (Halifax) was triumphant in both the 500- (4:39.42) and 1,000-yard freestyle races (9:31.37) for SFU, while Channah Yip (Hong Kong SAR, China) snagged the 200-yard butterfly crown in 1:54.64.

On the women's side, Vetter was responsible for three of the Red Leafs' solo wins, taking the 1,000-yard freestyle (a season-best 10:36.76) and both the 100- (1:07.98) and 200-yard (2:27.90) breaststrokes. Whitmore won both the 50- (24.39) and 100-yard freestyles (52.00).
 
Tori Meklensek, a junior from Kitchener, Ont., did her part for SFU's dominant day, placing first atop both the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.60) and 500-yard freestyle (5:07.51). Williams also got an individual triumph as she blazed through the 100-yard butterfly in 58:15.
