The Simon Fraser University (SFU) Women's Soccer team delivered a commanding performance in the NCAA West Regionals Thursday afternoon in Pomona, California, defeating Western Oregon 3-2. This is the first NCAA West Region post-season victory for the Red Leafs, marking a significant moment in the program's history.
The team wasted no time asserting themselves, as
Kiera Scott opened the scoring in the 9th minute. SFU doubled their lead later in the first half with a goal by
Alyssa Clark, giving the team a comfortable 2-0 advantage heading into the second half.
Western Oregon came out strong after the break, cutting the deficit early to make it 2-1. But SFU responded with resilience with Scott striking her second goal of the match, restoring the two-goal cushion, and marking Scott's 7th game winning goal of the season. Despite a late surge from Western Oregon, who scored in the 87th minute to make it 3-2, SFU held firm.
A standout performance from goalkeeper
Sarah Loewen proved crucial, as she delivered key saves to preserve the lead and secure the win.
After clinching the GNAC Women's Soccer Championship and earning a spot in the NCAA West Regionals for the third consecutive year, SFU has achieved a historic milestone, their first-ever win in an NCAA West Regional game. With this victory, the team improves to an impressive 14-2-5 record and advances further into the NCAA tournament. Their next matchup is set for Sunday, November 23 at 3:00 pm.
