FOREST GROVE, Ore. – History has just been made for the Simon Fraser University Clan football team as they earned their first NCAA victory, defeating Pacific University on Saturday afternoon by a score of 36-28. SFU is now 1-0 on the season.
Running back Bo Palmer got SFU on the scoreboard first with a 23-yard run for the touchdown. Pacific answered with a touchdown, completing a 58-yard drive with Gunther Schultze running into the end zone. SFU answered with a field goal from kicker Ian Sternau to give SFU the 10-7 lead, closing out the first quarter. After T.C. Campbell launched a pass to Blake Anthony for 30 yards, Bryan Kershner drove two yards for the touchdown, taking Pacific to halftime with a 14-10 lead.
Pacific came out strong in the second half as Jordan Fukumoto caught a 36-yard pass from Campbell in the end zone, one of Fukumoto's seven receptions on the day. The touchdown gave Pacific an eleven point lead over Simon Fraser. With the Pacific offense poised to enter the red zone again, a Campbell pass was intercepted by newly converted linebacker Adam Berger who returned the ball for 54 yards for the touchdown.
With SFU trailing 21-17 to start the fourth quarter, Bo Palmer put up one of the biggest rushes of his career taking the hand-off for 72 yards for the touchdown to give SFU their first lead since the first quarter. Greg Bowcott came into the game replacing starting quarterback Trey Wheeler and delivered twice, with an eight-yard rush and a two-yard rush, scoring two touchdowns and giving SFU a 36-21 lead. Pacific added a touchdown late but it was not enough.
Palmer rushed for 181 yards, adding two touchdowns. Bowcott came up big with short yardage, notching two touchdowns, rushing for 13 yards. Wheeler went 6-for-14 for 52 passing yards. Campbell went 23-for-38 with 343 yards. SFU scored 19 of their 36 points in the fourth quarter.
