OKLAHOMA CITY – The Simon Fraser University women's wrestling team got their 2012-13 season started on Saturday at the Oklahoma City Duals.
"This was a good competition for our athletes," said head coach Mike Jones. "One of our wrestlers did not make weight which made things a little more challenging. This event gave us a good view of the top teams we will face this season."
SFU started out by defeating Cumberlands 28-8, King Red 30-10 and Lindenwood-Belleville 38-6.
The Clan then lost their match against Lindenwood, whom the Clan had never lost to in their history.
Since Lindenwood had already lost to Missouri Valley, it dropped SFU into the fifth-place bracket.
The loss to Lindenwood sent the Clan to the consolation semi-final, where the Clan disposed of Wayland Baptist by a score of 35-5, sending the SFU women into the dual for fifth place.
SFU made no mistake, defeating Jamestown 31-4 to secure fifth place in the event.
Justina Di Stasio (Port Moody, BC),
Danielle Lappage (Olds, AB),
Darby Huckle (Sarnia, ON) and
Gina Carpenter (Surrey, BC) all went undefeated on the day.
Jenna McLatchy (Chilliwack, BC) was 5-1 as was
Laura Gordon (New Westminster, BC) and Nikkie Brar (Burnaby, BC).
Sidney Morrison (Ucluelet, BC) went 4-2 while
Laura Wilson (Courtenay, BC) was 3-3 and
Carolyn Failanga (Burnaby, BC) went 4-3.
The SFU women will be back in action at home when they host the Hargobind International on November 2.
