St. George, UT – With their largest margin of victory this season, the Simon Fraser University women's basketball team defeated the Dixie State College Red Storm 74-52 on Saturday afternoon.
"We had a lot more energy to start the game today," said head coach Bruce Langford. "We had a few bad turnovers early on but Katie Lowen made a few good decisions that helped us turn that around and as a team, we got better. We were strong defensively and while we didn't shoot the ball great as a team, we improved from yesterday."
Three members of the Clan reached double figures in points as
Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) led the way with 17 points,
Chelsea Reist (Mission, BC) had 13 and Kia van Laare (New Westminster, BC) had 12.
"Yesterday we made a lot of undisciplined errors and it reflected on the scoreboard," said Petit. "We reflected on those mistakes from last game and we learned from them today."
The Clan had 15 steals on the afternoon to Dixie State's seven. SFU outscored Dixie State 26-11 off of turnovers in the game and scored 20 second chance points to Dixie's seven.
Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) also contributed four assists.
Kaylah Miller led the Red Storm with 14 points while Johnna Brown also reached double digits with 10.
"We were very focused today and there was a lot of positive energy," said
Rebecca Langmead (Torbay, NL). "We took it to them early on and it paid off."
Three minutes into the opening half with Dixie State leading the Clan 5-3, Lowen hit a jumper to tie the game that sparked an 11-2 run for the Clan, that saw SFU jump in front 14-7.
The Clan gradually built up a 10 point lead, going on an 8-4 run to end the half and go into the locker rooms leading 32-22.
Over the first six minutes of the second half, the Clan expanded their lead to 18 points, thanks to a 12-4 run that included four points each from Chambers and Raincock-Ekunwe, making the score 44-26.
SFU continued to build their lead the rest of the way, cruising to the 22 point victory.
With the win, the Clan improve to 4-1 on the season.
The SFU women's basketball team will now return home to host the Cal-State Stanislaus Warriors for a pair of games next Friday, November 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the West Gym and then again on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
The games will mark the first NCAA division II home games as full fledged members of the NCAA for the SFU women's basketball program.
