LONDON, Ont. – The Simon Fraser University women's wrestling team defeated some of the top collegiate programs in Canada and the United States on Saturday, taking first place at the Harry Geris Memorial Duals.
The Clan took first over top ranked Oklahoma City and Danielle Lappage (Olds, AB) earned the Peter Michienzi Award as the top Canadian wrestler.
The SFU women won five contests to earn their spot in the first place match.
They started by defeating Oklahoma City 21-10 before taking down MacMaster University by a convincing score of 25-0.
The Clan continued to dominate in their next match, defeating Missouri Valley by a score of 26-5 and Lakehead University of Thunder Bay 29-1.
In their fifth dual meet of the day, the Clan faced a Western Canadian foe by another convincing margin, defeating the University of Alberta 27-5.
Oklahoma City stood between the Clan and first place in SFU's final dual match of the day and the Clan prevailed by a score of 21-11 to take the title.
It was the first time in four years that the Clan women defeated Oklahoma City.
The Clan will be back in action on December 7 at the Nordhagen International in Calgary.
