Clan set for Final Four battle with Saginaw Valley

Evans, GA - The Simon Fraser University men's soccer team have spent the last two days in Evans, GA preparing for their NCAA Final Four match with the Saginaw Valley Cardinals on Thursday at 11:00 a.m.

One streak will be snapped in Thursday's game as the Clan enter the contest on a 15-game unbeaten streak and the Cardinals have won thirteen straight matches.

The Clan will also be defending their number one seed against the Cardinals as SFU is the only number one remaining in the tournament, as Saginaw Valley entered at number two in their region, while on the other side of the bracket Mercyhurst entered at number three and Lynn at two.

The winner of the SFU versus Saginaw Valley game will face the winner of the Mercyhurst versus Lynn game on Saturday in the NCAA Championship game on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. PST.

The GNAC Champion Clan have been led by forward Carlo Basso (Coquitlam, BC), who leads the GNAC in scoring with 33 points (13 goals, seven assists) and already ranks fourth all-time in GNAC history (with one season of eligibility remaining) with 86 points.

Basso was one of six SFU players selected to the Daktronics NCAA Division II West Region all-star team.

Joining Basso on the first team were three teammates – midfielders Michael Winter (Vancouver, BC) and Ryan Dhillon (Delta, BC) and defender Matt Besuschko (Port Moody, BC). Two SFU defenders – Quante Abbott Hill Smith (Brampton, ON) and Helge Neumann (Oslo, Norway) earned second team honors.

While the potent Clan offence will look to take it to Saginaw Valley the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Champion Cardinals will look to their strong defensive play for success.

Like the Clan, the Cardinals led their conference in goals against as Saginaw Valley allowed just 16.

They also led their conference in goals for with 48 while the Clan led the GNAC by a large margin, scoring 72 in 2012.
