Kolanko sisters to suit up together for the Clan

7/3/2012 9:08:00 PM

BURNABY, B.C. – For the eighth time in the history of the Simon Fraser University softball program, sisters will suit up for SFU together as the softball team has added Rachel Kolanko (North Vancouver, BC).

"I wanted to come to SFU because the school has an outstanding reputation in academics and athletics," said Kolanko. "I'm happy to be a part of the first NCAA program in Canada."

Kolanko joins her sister, pitcher Lauren Kolanko who joined the Clan last season.

"I'm really excited to play with my sister.  We were always to many years apart to play with each other so it's exciting to get this opportunity," continued Kolanko.

While she is a resident of North Vancouver, she plays with the White Rock Renegade organization. Over the past few seasons, she has played a variety of positions, which head coach Mike Renney sees as a plus.

"Rachel has demonstrated both the ability and enthusiasm to play both the infield and outfield of late," said Renney. "She can be called upon to play virtually any infield position with her most of her experience coming at third base and short stop."

Kolanko has an National Softball Association Championship on her resume as well as a fourth-place finish at the BC Provincial Championships at the under-16 level.

"I think my strengths are my speed and a consistent bat. Next season, I just want to contribute to the success of the team as much as I can," finished Kolanko.

Concluded Renney, "With her speed she has recently seen some time in the outfield.  I like her versatility and willingness to play where she can best help her team.  She also coming with the same enthusiasm and energy that earned her older sister a walk-in spot with our team last year."
