Box Score Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University men's soccer team hosted the Vancouver Island Mariners on Sunday afternoon at Terry Fox Field, securing their second victory in as many games, defeating the Mariners 3-0.
“I thought, at times we could have played a little better,” said Clan midfielder
Jovan Blagojevic (Coquitlam, BC). “We were slow to pinch when we should have at times but we had some good stuff going on to. The wingers were able to go at their players and get the crosses in like we should. We finished pretty well for the most part but there's still a lot of work to do and hopefully it gets better from here.”
Playing in his first game of the season, Blagojevic led the Clan, with a pair of goals against Vancouver Island, while
Justin Wallace (Kamloops. BC) picked up the third tally.
“The first goal was a free kick and to be honest, I just wanted to get a good cross in there. I got a lucky bounce and it went in the back of the net. The second one I intercepted the ball and my first thought was goal so I went for it, beat the one guy, happened to hit it well and into the net it went,” continued Blagojevic.
Senior goalkeeper
Hide Ozawa (Victoria, BC) got the start in net, recording the Clan's second straight shut out, stopping all four shots on net.
The Clan had nine shots on net in the game, to Vancouver Islands four.
Blagojevic opened the scoring for SFU in the sixth minute with an unassisted goal off a free kick. He scored his second of the game with time winding down in the first half, in the 43rd minute, with a rocket of a shot, making the game 2-0 heading to the locker rooms.
Wallace scored his goal in the 60th minute. After getting the pass from
Marco Voegeli (Lenzerheide, Switzerland), Wallace put a shot across the box, past the keeper into the corner of the net to give the Clan a comfortable three goal lead that they would ride to victory.
With the win, the Clan move to 2-0 on the season, both non-conference victories.
SFU will continue the non-conference portion of their schedule when they host Azusa Pacific on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and Hawaii Pacific on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Both games are at Terry Fox Field. Admission is free.
“It's going to get tougher from here. Azusa and Hawaii will be technically sound and will be good tests for us. We've got to do a good job in training, get our fitness up and work better together as a team,” finished Blagojevic.
