Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University Clan led early, but could not withstand a comeback by Saint Martin's as SFU fell to the Saints three sets to two.
Jessica Young (Vancouver, BC) led SFU with 10 kills. She was followed closely by
Madeline Hait (Burnaby, BC) and
Katie Forsyth (Delta, BC) who had nine each.
Victoria Senges (Surrey, BC) had 28 assists for SFU in the match.
Five players also reached double digits in digs as
Alanna Chan (Port Moody, BC) led the way with 21, followed by
Danielle Curtis (North Vancouver, BC) with 17, Forsyth with 15, Senges with 14 and Young with 11.
The Saints Kristyn Ross led all players in kills and digs with 17 and 24 respectively.
The Clan won a pair of close sets early on, taking the first set 25-22 and the second 25-23 to take an early two sets to none lead.
In the first set the Clan opened up an early four point lead thanks to a 4-1 run to make the score 8-4, a lead they would maintain for most of the set.
The second set was tied 12 times but the Clan prevailed.
SFU opened up a six-point lead at 10-4 in the third set before the Saints started to slowly mount a comeback. With the score at 24-23 in SFU's favour the Clan had a chance to take the set and the match but the two sides instead traded points with SMU eventually taking the third set, 29-27.
That was the beginning of the Saints comeback as they took the fourth set 25-17 and the decisive fifth set 15-11 to hand the Clan the loss.
With the loss, SFU falls to 2-10 on the season and 0-6 in conference play.
The Clan will be back in action on Monday, at home in the West Gym when they host Douglas College in non-conference action beginning at 7:00 p.m.
