Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University Clan men's soccer team improved their win streak to three in a row to start the season on Friday night at Terry Fox Field with a 6-1 victory over Azusa Pacific.
A large crowd of 642 showed up, fired up and ready to help carry the team to victory.
"It was a great performance," said
Carlo Basso (Coquitlam, BC). "We knew it was going to be a tough game but everyone came out and did their jobs. We earned this win."
The Clan started the first half on a roll, firing shots from all over the place. Great chances were created, including one by
Alex Rowley (Maple Ridge, BC) when his shot attempt from the 25 yard line hit the post.
Another great opportunity was missed when
Roman Doutkevitch (Saskatoon, SK) missed a header above the net several minutes later.
With 14 minutes left in the first half,
Colin Jacques (Richmond, BC) gave SFU its first lead of the game with a shot to make it 1-0.
Then,
Lucas Ferritto (Hamilton, ON) gave SFU a 2-0 lead off a set up from
Adam Staschuk (Delta, BC).
After the first half, the Clan were out shooting Azusa Pacific 18-4.
SFU started the second half with a vengeance, scoring three unanswered goals to build a 5-0 lead.
Justin Wallace (Kamloops, BC) got the ball rolling when, after he got tripped in the eighteen yard box, he was awarded a penalty kick. He put the ball into the left top corner to give SFU an 3-0 lead.
It was then the 2011 GNAC most valuable player Basso's turn to join the parade when, after being tripped up, he worked his way in and scored on a header from a
Jovan Blagojevic (Coquitlam, BC) shot.
Blagojevic's hard work paid off 20 seconds later when he received a great pass from
Chris Bargholz (Fuessen, Germany) and scored a goal of his own, giving SFU a 5-0 lead.
The Clan finished things off with a spectacular bicycle kick goal from
John Hodnett (Wolverhampton, UK), which was set up by a shot from Basso.
The Cougars added one late to break the shut out, making the final 6-1.
With the win, the Clan improve to 3-0 on the season.
The SFU men's soccer team will be back in action on Sunday against Hawaii Pacific at Terry Fox Field at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
