Clan sweep conference awards

Portland, OR – Sweeping the awards of Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year, Simon Fraser University men's soccer capped the regular season with a strong showing in the 2013 Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Conference teams.

Chris Bargholz (Fuessen, Germany), a second-team All-GNAC midfielder in 2012, was voted as the GNAC Player of the Year while teammates Alex Rowley (Maple Ridge, BC) and Magnus Kristensen (Stavanger, Norway)received Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors, respectively. SFU head coach Alan Koch was named GNAC Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive season.

Bargholz and Kristensen were unanimous selections to the first team.

Five more Clan players earned second team honors, and two were named honorable mention giving 11 total SFU players All-GNAC recognition. Ryan Dhillon (Delta, BC) repeated as a second-team honoree for the second-straight season.

It is the third straight season that a Clan player has won player of the year in the GNAC as Michael Winter (Vancouver, BC) won the award in 2012 and Carlo Basso (Coquitlam, BC) was named Co-Player of the Year in 2013.

With the GNAC season in the books, the Clan are turning their attention to the 2013 NCAA Tournament, which will begin Thursday in Los Angeles, CA against Cal-Baptist at 7:00 p.m.

The winner of Thursday's match will face top ranked Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday.
