LAIE, Hawaii – The Simon Fraser University softball team recorded their first two wins of the 2013 season on Wednesday, defeating the Brigham Young University Hawaii Seasiders 9-2 in Game 1 and 8-0 in Game 2.
"I think
Kelsie Hawkins turned in a really gutsy performance, especially considering how early it is in the season and we haven't been outside much yet," said head coach Mike Renney. "Both pitchers did an outstanding job. We're going to rely on our pitching this year but both of them are still working on getting their timing this early in the season."
Cara Lukawesky (Coquitlam, BC) got the start and the win in the opening game, allowing two runs in seven innings pitched while scattering eight hits.
It was Lukawsky's first win of the young season.
Carly Lepoutre (Pickering, ON) went four for five with two runs scored in the first game of the day while
Kaitlyn Cameron (Langley, BC) went two for three with a run batted in while scoring two herself.
BYU-Hawaii jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning but Lukawesky shut the home side down in the next two innings while the Clan scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead into the fourth.
The Seasiders notched their second run of the game in the fourth but the Clan had already added two more in the top of the fourth, and added four more in the top of the sixth, cruising to the 9-2 win.
Kelsie Hawkins (Victoria, BC) got the start in game two and also pitched a complete game, throwing all six innings and striking out nine of the 18 batters she faced to record the shutout and her first win of the season.
Several Clan players contributed offensively as Lepoutre went two for four with two RBI's while
Lauren Mew (Vancouver, BC) went two for four with two RBI's and two runs scored.
Trisha Bouchard (Montreal, QC) went three for four with a run scored and an RBI while
Danielle Raison (Langley, BC) went two for three, driving in two runs and scoring two herself.
The Clan had single runs in the first and second inning before the two teams held each other off the scoresheet for the next three innings.
In the fourth BYU threatened to tie things up but with one out and two runners on, Hannah Kelson was called out for batters interference on an attempted bunt, and Hawkins got the next batter out to end the threat.
SFU broke things open in the top of the sixth with six runs to take an 8-0 lead and Hawkins shut down the Seasiders in the bottom of the sixth to take the eight run victory.
"I think our offence is settling in and getting our timing down. Three of our freshman have now gotten their first collegiate hits out of the way. As we invest in our freshman we're going to take some lumps but I think it's an investment that will pay off," continued Renney.
With the win, the Clan improve to 2-5 in non-conference play this season. They will be back in action on
Friday when they visit Chaminade University for a double header, beginning at 6:30 p.m. PT.
"Overall the team is a little more upbeat after losing five in a row and getting in the win column today. In the big picture though, it's a process. We still have lots of work to do and we'll continue to do that," finished Renney.
