Abrams named Red Lion Athlete of the Week

2/25/2013 6:17:00 PM

Portland, OR – Simon Fraser University women's track athlete Andrea Abrams (Saskatoon, SK) has been awarded this week's Red Lion Athlete of the Week award in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The award comes thanks to her performance this past weekend at the Seattle Pacific Last-Chance meet where she ran a time of 8.82 seconds in the 60-metre-hurdles, winning the race.

Her time was the fourth fastest time ever ran by a Great Northwest Athletic Conference athlete in that event, and is her own personal best time.

She recently placed third in the same event at the GNAC Championship, her final indoor GNAC competition of her career.

“I am pleased about how all my races went this season, specifically at the GNAC Championship,” said Abrams. “It was obvious in that race that there was a common sense of determination among all the athletes to compete at their very best.”

Abrams' times this weekend and at the conference championship reached the provisional qualifying times for the NCAA Championships but she fell just shy of earning a spot.

“I am coming off a very successful indoor season that has provided me a good foundation mentally and physically for the rest of the season,” she continued.  “I am confident in my ability to build off of this and improve my outdoor performances in the 100-metre hurdles as we transition into my final outdoor season with the Clan.”

Abrams returns to the track for the Clan's outdoor season on March 30, 2013 at the UBC Open, while five women's track and field athletes head to Birmingham, AL on March 7, 2013 for the NCAA
Championships.
