Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University softball team swept their double header against the visiting Central Washington Wildcats on Friday afternoon, winning the first game 6-0 and the second game 9-1.

Cara Lukawesky (Coquitlam, BC) pitched the complete game shut out in game one, scattering four hits and two walks with five strike outs.

Central Washington loaded the bases in the first inning thanks to two hits and a walk but did not score, and their only offence the rest of the game was one hit in each of the third and fifth innings.

Catcher Kaitlyn Cameron (Langley, BC) went two for four for the Clan in game one with a run batted in. Rosie Murphy (Markham, ON) singled home two runs in her only at bat and scored a run herself earlier in the game. Lauren Mew (Vancouver, BC) went one for three with a single, two RBI's and a run scored.

The first game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Clan scored four runs.

Mew's single opened the scoring with two runs and then she scored the third run herself when she came home on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Trisha Bouchard (Montreal, QC) scored on Cameron's double to make it 4-0.

SFU added two more in the sixth on Murphy's single to secure the win.

Kelsie Hawkins (Victoria, BC) got the start and the win in game two, as she pitched all five innings in a game that was shortened by the mercy rule. She struck out six and allowed only two hits and one run.

The Wildcats' lone run came in the top of the fifth inning in the form of a solo home run off the bat of Maikala Galusha. That cut the Clan lead to 5-1 but SFU responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early as the eight run lead enforced the mercy rule.

Cameron went two for three in the second game with three RBI's and two runs scored while Mew also had a good game, going two for three with an RBI and two runs scored.

Lauren Kolanko (North Vancouver, BC) also had a multi-hit game going two for three with an RBI and a run scored.

Mackenzie Bender (St. Albert, AB) ended the game in the bottom of the fifth when she notched three RBI's with a double that cleared the bases that made the score 9-1.

"It was a great feeling to get that hit," said Bender. "I was pretty fortunate to be in that situation. I just tried to stay calm and I'm happy I was able to make solid contact and drive the ball through. I just tried to stick to my mechanics and keep my head clear and it worked out."

With the victories, the Clan improve to 7-9 on the 2013 season and 3-0 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

SFU will be back in action at Beedie Field on Saturday when they host the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders in a double header beginning at 1:00 p.m. They will then complete the second game of their double header against the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets, that was suspended due to inclement weather, on Sunday beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Beedie Field.
