Burnaby, BC - After a 10-day layoff, the Simon Fraser University softball team got back in action at Beedie Field on Saturday afternoon, dropping both ends of a double header to the Western Oregon Wolves.
The Clan lost the opener 4-0 and the second game 10-6.
Cara Lukawesky (Coquitlam, BC) got the start in game one, taking the loss as she gave up three hits and four runs, all of them earned.
The SFU offence managed just one hit in the contest, an Alex Baylak (Regina, SK) single in the second inning.
All of the Wolves runs in game one came across via the home run, as Desiree Villegas had a two run homer in the second and Amanda Evola had a two run home run in the third.
Kelsie Hawkins (Victoria, BC) started the second game for the Clan, working a total of five and two thirds innings, allowing 10 runs, seven of which were earned, on seven hits.
Mackenzie Bender (St. Albert, AB) relieved Hawkins for an inning and a third, allowing no runs and no hits.
Western Oregon jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning when the Wolves scored four runs on a hit and three errors.
WOU added one more in the third and three more in the fourth to take what looked like a commanding 8-0 lead, but in the fifth inning, the Clan staged a comeback.
Baylak led off the inning with a solo shot to score the Clan's first run of the day which was followed by a Rachel Proctor (Surrey, BC) walk and a Carly Lepoure (Pickering, ON) single to put runners on first and second.
After a pitching change, senior Lauren Mew (Vancouver, BC) doubled to score the Clan's second run of the game and put runners on second and third.
Danielle Raison (Langley, BC) then drove in two more with a double and Bouchard capped the rally with a single to score Raison, leaving the score at 8-5 for WOU heading into the sixth.
That was as close as SFU would get. While the Clan added one in the bottom of the seventh, Western Oregon added two in the top half of the inning to secure the four run victory.
With the losses, the Clan drop to 11-6 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play and 21-18 on the season.
On Sunday, SFU will host first place and NCAA Division II 21st ranked Saint Martin's University at Beedie field in their final home games of the 2013 season.
It will also be the final home games for the Clan's graduating seniors who will be recognized with an on field presentation after the games.
"SFU is a quality academic school and our players are a little mentally fatigued playing in the middle of exams," said Head Coach Mike Renney. "Our past teams have struggled at this time of year but we'll finish up exams on Wednesday. Sunday will be equally challenging against another tough team. We'll get a good nights sleep and hopefully be ready to go."
Game one begins at 1:00 p.m.
