Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University men's soccer team wrapped up the non-conference portion of their schedule by remaining undefeated with a convincing 9-0 win over the Trinity Lutheran Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Terry Fox Field.
"We have all sorts of different guys who can score so it was nice to see so many players get on the scoresheet and it should give them confidence heading into conference play," said Head Coach
Alan Koch. "All three of our goalkeepers have played now and have played very well. I give Toscanny (Pandu-Oesman) a lot of credit. He was very composed, his decision making was very good, his communication was good. I hope as a goalkeeping tandem they can keep giving us strong performances."
The game winner was scored early in this match, as
Carlo Basso (Coquitlam, BC) scored it with his first goal of the season in the opening minute of the game on a penalty kick.
The Clan laid it on early, scoring two more goals in the first 25 minutes to lead 3-0 early on.
In the 20th minute,
Colin Jacques (Richmond, BC) got credit with a goal when his cross went off a Trinity Lutheran defender and in.
In the 25th minute, Jacques got his second of the match when he took a cross from Basso and scored to make it 3-0.
The score remained 3-0 for SFU until the 70th minute but then the home side exploded for three more goals over the course of the next 10 minutes.
In the 70th minute,
Jason van Blerk (North Vancouver, BC) scored on a header off a corner kick from
Alex Rowley (Maple Ridge, BC) to make it 4-0 and then in the 71st minute,
Glenn Paden (Seattle, WA) scored his first goal as a member of the Clan on a penalty kick to make it 5-0 before
Lucas Ferritto (Hamilton, ON) scored unassisted in the 80th minute to make it 6-0.
In the final 10 minutes of the contest, Paden added two more goals to complete the hat trick and Ferritto one to give the Clan their nine goal victory.
"It was nice to get back on the field. Everyone wanted to play this game and we really turned it on in the second half," said Paden. "This is a well established program that I'm excited to be apart of. I hope all season I can be a physical player for the team and let the guys who score do the work and score like they did here."
Toscanny Pandu-Oesman (North Delta, BC) made his first start of the regular season for SFU, earning the win and the shutout.
The Clan will begin Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next week when they travel to Billings, MT to face the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets on Thursday and to Nampa, ID to face the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders on Saturday.
